Delhi Citizens Stage Unusual Protest as Air Quality Plunges into “Very Poor” Category

#1

Post by indiaforums »

In a rare public demonstration on Sunday, hundreds of residents, including parents, children, and environmental activists, gathered at India Gate in New Delhi to protest the city’s deteriorating air quality, demanding urgent intervention from the authorities.

The protest comes at a time when the capital’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has consistently hovered in the “very poor” to “severe” range, with readings reaching around 340 and above. Demonstrators carried placards with slogans such as “Breathing is killing us” and “Smog se Azadi!” (Freedom from smog), highlighting the growing health crisis in the city.

Law enforcement officials stated that several protesters were detained by Delhi Police because the gathering was held at a non designated protest site and disrupted traffic. Opposition parties criticized the government for its inaction and alleged data manipulation, calling the situation a public health emergency.

The Delhi government, however, maintained that several remedial steps are underway, including measures to control construction dust, expansion of electric bus services, and strict monitoring of industrial emissions. Despite these assurances, residents say there’s been little visible improvement due to weather conditions that trap pollutants and the additional impact of crop residue burning in nearby states.

The protest reflects mounting frustration among Delhi’s citizens over recurring smog episodes each winter and the perceived lack of effective action. As one protester expressed, “This is a health emergency, not a blame game.”
